Marga Ortigas got her start in journalism during the most catastrophic volcanic eruption in recent history. It was 1991 and Mount Pinatubo blew up in the Philippines, leaving a lasting impact on the world’s climate.
Since then, Marga joined two of the largest international news organizations — CNN and Al Jazeera — and has gone to the most vulnerable communities around the world speaking with the people most affected by calamities, both natural and man-made.
Apart from covering typhoons, drought, rising sea levels, and the plight of climate refugees, she’s interviewed world leaders and influencers in various fields, across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East.
Marga has also spent quite a bit of time in desert war zones and other hostile environments.
There were also socio-political crises and global financial meltdowns.
Sometime in all that, Marga was awarded a British Council scholarship to London and completed a master’s degree in literature. It reinforced her dedication to telling the human story.
Through it all, she’s kept somewhat sane thanks to chocolate and show tunes.*
